History of World Book and Copyright Day
World Book Day was started in 1922 by Vicente Clavel, director of Cervantes Publishing House. He took the initiative to celebrate this day with the aim of honoring Miguel de Cervantes. The first World Book Day was celebrated in Barcelona in 1926. This Book Day was celebrated on October 7, the birthday of Miguel de Cervantes. But later, the day of the death of Miguel de Cervantes i.e. 23 April was chosen to celebrate this day. UNESCO declared April 23 as World Book Day to pay tribute to great literary figures including William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
