The Indian Navy has made significant progress in strengthening its operational capability with the commissioning of its new base, INS Jatayu at Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep. The commissioning ceremony of INS Jatayu was attended by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar along with several dignitaries including Administrator of Lakshadweep Praful Patel, Chief of the Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral V Srinivas and Chief of the Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay J Singh. The event was a significant moment in the Indian Navy's commitment to safeguard maritime security.

Inspired by the heroic character Jatayu from the epic Ramayana, the base was named to honor his spirit of selfless service and unwavering dedication. Admiral Kumar highlighted the role of Jatayu as the 'First Responder' in the Ramayana, who symbolizes service before self, echoing the ethos of the Indian Navy's commitment to security and surveillance.

Admiral Kumar stressed the strategic importance of Lakshadweep amid the current geopolitical developments. Captain Lavkesh Thakur, Officer-in-Charge of the Navy (Lakshadweep) underlined the importance of Minicoy's location on traditional trade routes, making it a strategic vantage point to gather vital information on shipping activities.
