Inauguration ceremony in Kolkata
In Kolkata, the festivities began with an inaugural ceremony led by Shri Janardan Prasad, Director General, GSI, who lit the traditional lamp to commence the celebrations. In this program, former Director General of GSI, Dr. M.K. Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Joydeep Guha, Additional Director General and Head of the Department, CHQ, along with other eminent serving and retired officers of GSI.
Honoring the founding fathers:
The ceremony was inaugurated by Dr. Thomas Oldham, the visionary founder of GSI and Dr. M.S., the first Indian head of GSI. It was accompanied by emotional tributes to Krishnan by placing formal garlands on his paintings. This gesture symbolizes the deep respect and tribute given to his pioneering contribution.
Geological Wonders Exhibition
An exhibition displaying a range of rocks, minerals and fossils was inaugurated, providing an enriching experience to the students of various colleges in Kolkata and its suburbs. This educational initiative aims to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of India's geological heritage among the younger generation.
Southern Zone Celebrations in Hyderabad
Meanwhile, the celebration was also celebrated with equal enthusiasm at the Southern Zone Headquarters in Hyderabad. Students from local schools were invited to explore the picturesque rock garden on campus and immerse themselves in the wonders of geology.

Addressing the gathering, Additional Director General Venkateswara Rao congratulated all the employees for their dedicated contribution to the mission of GSI. Shri Venkateswara appreciated the achievements of the Southern Region in meeting the targets related to e-HRMS and iGOT within record time frame. He appreciated the successful workshops conducted by Deputy Directors General of State Units and GSI officers focusing on the utility of NGCM data, NGDR portal and emerging technologies in line with the directions of the Ministry of Mines.
